If you have been following our blogs and newsletters, you may be starting to see a theme in the topics we share with you.
Every year at Dedham Acupuncture, we have a theme for our team. Most of us are moms, grandmothers, or are married to educators and need time off around school vacations. So, we follow the school year calendar when scheduling our staff meetings and run our staff meetings from September to June.
The theme for this year (starting September 2022) has been for our staff to “Step Into our Best and Highest Selves”.
This is a tall order – and it’s also very broad. I’ll share with you the secret to fulfilling this big order – we try to drill down the basics in the clinic. This means that we answer the questions:
“Are we following all of our SOPs (standard operating procedures)?”
“Is the clinic clean, clean, clean?”
“What are we tolerating that could be slowly eroding our operations?”
This last question is very important. As we move into the New Year and we start to make our resolutions – it can be fun and exciting – but also daunting. You’ve probably felt the same about some of your own resolutions. In order for us to step into our best and highest selves and truly embrace our resolutions, we need to be asking ourselves – “What is holding us back?” and “What are we tolerating?” The answer may be really surprising.
Now for a moment of oversharing – I am a highly motivated person. But lately, I just can’t seem to get out of my own way. It finally dawned on me last week that I rarely sleep through the night. Huh. It started as a few nights a month during the pandemic in 2020. Then, it started to happen 50% percent of the time. I would wake up between 2 and 4 am. Not every night, but enough nights. Towards the end of 2022, it started to happen every. single. night. It can often take up to 2 hours for me to fall back asleep. And boy, am I tired in the morning. It actually became so routine that I didn’t even see it as a problem. It just was what it was. My husband and I were forced to spend 10 days in a full-size bed over the holidays at my parent’s house. That extra closeness had my husband noticing that I just don’t sleep. I hadn’t even realized that it was a problem until he mentioned it to me.
As an acupuncturist, I have the means to address this right away through acupuncture and herbs. And wow, I finally slept 8 hours last night and am able to quickly write this note to you to explain how shining light on what we might be tolerating, can really help us to step into our best and highest selves.
So next time you are in for your acupuncture appointment, tell your acupuncturist what you have been tolerating. It may be a knee that gets cranky on rainy days. Or a slow burn in your back that makes you feel not so great during the day. Or the headache that you get every couple of days. Even if you don’t see it as a major problem right now, if it’s enough to notice, take care of it before it becomes one. Once this is solved, you may see how much easier it is to step into your best and highest self to really pay attention to your New Year’s Resolutions!
Here’s to your health,
Nicole
