Have you been levitating? We’re not talking about the sci-fi, floating above your bed type of levitation. Oh, no- we’re talking about a racing mind at 3 am, tired but wired, thoughts spinning in your head so much that your head hurts from jaw clenching type of levitating. Does that sound like you? Yeah, we thought so. We see this type of levitating pretty regularly in our practice, and there’s a reason for it.
A lot of people’s days go something like this: You’re very, very tired and can make yourself work at top speed during the day and by the time 8 pm comes around-you crash. Your sleep doesnt last long and you’re suddenly awakened by what seems like alarm bells between 2-4 am. Then when you realize it’s not time to get up yet, you try to go back to sleep, but can’t. When you get up in the morning, your neck is tight, your head hurts, and your jaw is so achy from clenching. And then, you do it all over again.
This dangerous cycle plays out night after night, after night. And levitating can look different on anyone. Maybe you have the levitating variety that comes with intense ringing in your ears or unrelenting migraines. Or perhaps your levitating affects your stomach and you get acid reflux or some close cousin of gnawing stomach pain. Either way, it’s uncomfortable and can really affect your quality of life. These issues long term can have real affects on your health! If these are reoccurring feelings you have day in and day out, its time to consider that something needs to change.
Why Does it Happen?
Levitating happens when our adrenal glands start pumping out stress hormones in the middle of the night. This causes us a lot of tension and hyperactivity, and it feels impossible to calm down. Our whole body clenches, and it can really affect the muscles in our upper body. On top of that, it can effect our digestive system and lead to a vicious cycle of emotional and physical dsicomfort.
What are the Adrenal Glands, Anyway?
Adrenal glands are two little pea-sized glands right above the kidneys that control hormone production, blood pressure, and stress responses. These glands respond to stress by producing a “flight or fight” response. It’s a normal response when you actually need to be alert, but if you’re constantly on edge all the time-not so good. Ideally, you would experience this response when in danger, but the average lifestyle of people today introduces all-new kinds of stress!
Unhealthy food, too much work, chemicals, lack of exercise, too much screen time, emotional stress, sugar, and alcohol can all cause adrenal stress and fatigue. If you’re introducing these things into your life every day, what you get is levitating at night.
Ready to Fix it?
Now for the good part! You can definitely introduce healthier daily practices to feel better. The number one thing you need to do is take some time for YOU! Breathe, take a walk outside every day, start eating whole foods, and throw away any lingering holiday candy. It’s not your friend, it’s your enemy! You also want to ditch the wine and booze-seriously! Drink tons of water, too! Focus on healthy habits and food to keep your body calm and off of “alert” mode.
